The Hoodie Passed Every Inspection
On paper, everything looked perfect.
The hoodie weighed exactly 480 GSM.
The measurements matched the approved tech pack.
The stitching was clean.

The fabric felt dense and premium.
If we'd approved production based only on appearance, this hoodie would have gone straight into bulk manufacturing.
Instead, we sent it through our standard wash test.
That's when the problem appeared.
After one wash, the body length had shrunk by almost 6%.
For a premium oversized hoodie, that's well beyond what we'd accept.
Why 6% Shrinkage Matters
A hoodie doesn't need to fall apart to disappoint a customer.
Even a few centimeters of shrinkage can completely change how it fits.
An oversized fit can suddenly become standard.
Sleeves feel shorter.
The hem sits higher.
Customers don't say,
"This garment experienced excessive dimensional instability."
They simply say,
"It doesn't fit anymore."
That's why dimensional stability matters just as much as GSM or fabric quality.
Our First Assumption Was Wrong
Initially, we suspected the fabric supplier.
But the lab report showed the cotton met specification.
The GSM was correct.
The yarn quality was consistent.
The issue wasn't the material itself.
It was what happened after the fabric left the knitting machine.
What We Investigated
Instead of replacing the fabric immediately, we reviewed every production stage.
We checked:
- Fabric relaxation time after knitting
- Compaction process
- Pre-shrinking treatment
- Heat-setting temperatures
- Washing procedure

Each stage affects how cotton behaves once the customer washes the garment.
The Real Cause
The fleece hadn't been allowed enough time to relax before cutting.
Cotton naturally releases internal tension after knitting.
Because production moved too quickly, some of that tension remained locked inside the fabric.
During the first wash, the fibers relaxed naturally.
The garment didn't suddenly shrink.
It finished shrinking.
That difference changed how we approached production.
What We Changed
Rather than increasing the hoodie size to compensate, we fixed the manufacturing process itself.
The revised workflow included:
- Longer fabric relaxation before cutting
- Additional compaction during finishing
- Updated pre-shrinking procedures
- Two complete wash tests before production approval
- Dimensional measurements after every wash cycle
These adjustments added time to sampling but significantly improved consistency.
The Results
The revised sample was tested again under identical washing conditions.
Shrinkage dropped from approximately 6% to under 3%, which aligned with our internal quality standard for heavyweight cotton fleece.
More importantly, the hoodie maintained its oversized silhouette after washing.
That's the result the customer actually experiences.
What Other Clothing Brands Can Learn
Heavyweight fabric alone doesn't guarantee quality.
Neither does a high GSM.
Two hoodies with identical fabric weights can perform very differently after washing if their finishing processes differ.
When evaluating a manufacturer, ask questions beyond fabric weight:
- Do you pre-shrink your fabrics?
- How do you test dimensional stability?
- Are garments measured after washing?
- How many wash tests are performed before production?
These questions often reveal more about manufacturing quality than the sample itself.
